Choices

Choosing to be kind vs choosing to be cruel

it makes economic sense (as well as moral and ethical sense) to provide homeless people with homes, saving millions of dollars per year according to several studies in Florida and NC…

People have a myriad of BASIC needs, sleep, breathe clean air and drink clean water, eat healthy food, to belong (to a group such as a family or community), health care, shelter, productive work and it is downright sadistic and cruel to deprive our fellow human beings of ANY of these.

Especially under these circumstances:

According to a NY Times report, In Many Cities, Rent Is Rising Out of Reach of Middle Class, “In December, Housing Secretary Shaun Donovan declared ‘the worst rental affordability crisis that this country has ever known.’ ”

Utah has reduced homeless and plans to completely end it by 2015. Utah has reduced homeless by 74% in the last 8 years by giving people homes without strings attached.

There are other such villages in Eugene, OR, Ithaca, NY, Michigan and other places

yet other cities are wasting valuable taxpayer dollars enacting cruel punishments to homeless people including spending millions putting up metal spikes, making it illegal for people to sleep in cars, lie down in public places, have belongings, and banning people from feeding them in 33 cities.

Thirty-three cities have already implemented these policies according to the National Coalition for the Homeless, and at least four municipalities — Daytona Beach, Florida; Raleigh, N.C.; Myrtle Beach, S.C.; and Birmingham, Alabama — have recently fined, removed, or threatened prison time against individuals and private groups that have fed the homeless.

Katharine Sacks-Jones, head of policy and campaigns at homelessness charity Crisis, said: “It is a scandal that anyone should sleep on the streets in 21st century Britain. Yet over the last three years rough sleeping has risen steeply across the country and by a massive 75 per cent in London.

“Behind these numbers are real people struggling with a lack of housing, cuts to benefits and cuts to homelessness services to help them rebuild their lives.

cities, like Davis, California, are taking a different approach: constructing public lockers where homeless people can safely store their possessions.

Since his first home give-away, Greg and some volunteers have built more than a dozen small homes on wheels and gifted them to the area’s homeless.

Clearly, there are choices to be made on how to spend or waste taxpayer dollars. Do we really want to be kind or cruel???

“The experiment is a powerful reminder that the homeless are people, just like us, with one exception. They are in trouble and in pain. And they are someone’s uncle or cousin or wife.”

Imagine “affordable and dignified housing” for the impoverished OR cruel and unusual punishment for the poor and homeless and WASTING TAXPAYER MONEY.

WHAT IS YOUR VISION FOR AMERICA, THE WORLD????

Do you want to live in a KIND, benevolent society and world that CARES for its members or do you want to live in this current climate of inhumanity, violence and despicable cruelty?

Every day we have a CHOICE. We can be PART OF THE SOLUTION or PART OF THE PROBLEM.

We can blame others but if we allow evil to flourish by not doing anything, then we are enabling evildoers to get away with murder and despicable crimes. During WWII, some people did not want to get involved out of fear or apathy and they allowed unspeakable crimes to happen because they DID NOTHING. They were afraid to speak out. They did not join others who worked in the Underground Resistance, hiding Jewish people, helping people get out of Germany, saving lives.

No one is perfect and we all make mistakes. But we can work towards a goal, a vision, a New World or we can shut up all of our senses, eyes, ears, nose and mouth and hope someone else will do something.

Everyone counts.

You can either be a hero/heroine or a villain.

You can choose to contribute or hide, go numb, be distracted.

Mother Theresa said that she saw the Hitler within herself and decided from then on to DO GOOD.  And she did a lot of good in her lifetime.

What are YOU choosing today???
